Dry needling may help you experience relief from pain and improve your range of motion. If done by an experienced professional, this is a safe way to solve some of your pain and motion issues (e.g. acute and chronic back pain, tension-type headache, neck pain as well as shoulder, elbow and knee conditions).
What is dry needling?
Here, the needles will stimulate your muscles and help treat musculoskeletal and pain issues. This method will also help improve blood flow and reduce the tightness in the area. As a result, recovery might speed up and your range of motion can improve.
To better understand how dry needling works, let’s first see what happens when a muscle is overused. Here, certain muscle fibres might not be receiving enough oxygen and blood supply. As a result, those muscle fibres find it hard to rest and function well. This can result in soreness and pain.
In dry needling, this will stimulate a trigger point that can help bring back normal blood supply into those muscle fibres. Notice that the role of the needles is just to stimulate your own normal functions. This has been an established principle in science and medicine where the goal of therapy is just to stimulate the body’s own natural healing process.
Does dry needling hurt?
Before the needling, you might feel a bit of pain or discomfort while the professional is still finding your trigger point (these areas are highly sensitive). Still, the slight pain or discomfort is tolerable.
During the needling, the needles might be too small for you to feel the insertion. Or, you might feel a slight prick as expected from needles being inserted into your skin. You might feel a bit uncomfortable especially if it’s your first time undergoing such a procedure.
After the needling, you might still feel some discomfort near the insertion site. This is expected because of the slightly invasive needles. The benefit though is that you might immediately feel some improvement about your pain relief and motion right after the needling session.
